The musical Hongryeon is based on two Korean classic stories: The Tale of Janghwa and Hongryeon and the folktale Baridegi. The Tale of Janghwa and Hongryeon tells the story of two sisters, Janghwa and Hongryeon, who are mistreated by their stepmother and killed, only to return as vengeful spirits to seek justice. Baridegi centers around Princess Bari, who embarks on a journey to save her father, despite him abandoning her at birth solely because she was born a daughter. The intersection of these two female protagonists, each navigating a male-dominated society, sets the offstage for Hongryeon’s exploration of the theme of female solidarity.
The heavenly court, Cheondojeong, where souls are judged, Hongryeon stands trial for the murder of her father and younger brother. She defends herself by claiming her actions were divine punishment carried out God’s behalf. However, Bari, the judge of the court, finds her story suspicious and embarks on a journey with the envoy Gangnim to uncover the truth. Along the way, Bari and Hongryeon confront their own inner wounds, which, though different, share striking similarities. The musical score combines rock, hip-hop, and traditional Korean music, gukak. Rock and hip-hop symbolize resistance, while gukak, particularly its spirit-cleansing rituals, represents healing and purification. Even foreign audiences unfamiliar with the stories of Janghwa and Hongryeon and Baridegi will find it easy to connect with and enjoy this production.
